The situation of the Radio Stations in Venezuela

Taken from www.glovobision.com

"At 7:47am the radio station CNB was shut down after recieving one notification of CONATEL (Comisión Nacional de Telecomunicaciones; National Bureau of Telecomunication). The station transmited the national anthem and proceded to transmit through internet, in the web site www.cnb.com.ve

Three functionaries of CONATEL arrived at 7:15am to notify that they had to turn off the transmitters by comand of the National Goberment.

The journalist Beatriz Adrián and William Echeverría transmitted the last minutes on air and some hours later they informed they would countinue the program from their website

The journalist and president of the National Association of Journalist of Venezuela, William Echeverría, said that there are many creative ways to keep on working. "Here, you can shut down a radio station, but you cannot shut down the freedom of thinking different" later he said "Who is the Venezuelan Goberment to determine which radio station we should listen to?"

The founder of the CNB circuit, Raiza Istúriz de Belfort, said that "we are in a dictatorship, they're shutting us up. The future is terrible. I believe that the freedom of speech won't exist anymore. They're doing this in one day when we don't have any tribunal where we could go and plea. We will keep on defending the democracy in Venezuela the way we have up to this day"

The journalist Laura Castellanos reminded that it's the second time that this happens in her professional career. "I had to leve Radio Caracas Televioón (RCTV) for the crisis we've been through. I have two little girls, what am I supposed to do now?. RCTV is closed, now CNB too. We have to keep informing, even if it's just online. Just like they have to work for they sustenance, so we do, and everyday they're shutting more doors.
Beatriz Adrián said "it's not casual that they shut the radio station a saturday morning. There are five stations in our circuit that are being shut down right now. They are mutilating the information that comes out everyday. Citizen, now is the time for you to express yourself, to say what you are feeling"

The neighbours of Chuao and the surrounding of the station went to CNB to support them. One of the workers in the station that was present at the moment of the shutting said "As a worker of CNB, the future is unclear. I have 14 years in CNB, I leave with a nice experience".

The producer, María Arvelo, reminded that "We did our job with quality and ethics. People is being left without someone to listen to them. There's gonna be no more diversity of opinions"

Simultaneously to the shutting down of CNB in Caracas, the stations 94.5FM CNB Táchira, CNB 100 Valencia and 102.1 CNB Zuliana were also shut down. The inhabitants of these cities got to these stations to offer them support. In the case of Táchira and Carabobo the members of CONATEL sent the notification of shutting down from Caracas.

Also, this friday at 8pm, Amércia 106.3FM went out of the air in Mérida, meanwhile Mundial AM and Orbita FM in Azoátegui are waiting for the notifications.

In Los Teques, Radio Metropolitana 150.5AM and 97.1FM were shut down. Both stations are transmiting online. In El Hatillo, 96.9FM was shut."
